How to Clean an Abaya at Home in Dubai

Yes, you can clean most abayas at home. Wash inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle or by hand, using a mild liquid detergent, then air dry in the shade — never in direct Dubai sun, which fades black fabric. Abayas with embroidery, beads or a structured cut should be dry cleaned instead.

Check the fabric before anything else

Most everyday abayas in Dubai are made from Nida, crepe or a polyester blend, and all three tolerate careful home washing. The care label decides: if it says dry clean only, believe it. The label matters most on abayas with a structured shoulder, a lined body or any embellishment, because water can warp the shape even when the fabric itself would survive.

A quick test for colour-fastness: press a damp white cloth on an inside seam for ten seconds. If black transfers to the cloth, the dye will bleed in a wash and the abaya should go to a professional clean instead.

Hand washing, step by step

Fill a tub with cold water and a small amount of mild liquid detergent — powder can leave residue on black fabric. Turn the abaya inside out, submerge it and let it soak for ten to fifteen minutes. Swish it gently through the water; do not scrub, twist or wring, because that is what stretches the drape out of shape.

Rinse in fresh cold water until no suds remain. To remove excess water, lay the abaya flat on a clean towel, roll the towel up and press lightly. This is slower than wringing but keeps the fabric's fall intact.

If you use the washing machine

Use the gentle or delicates cycle, cold water only, and put the abaya in a mesh laundry bag so buttons and zips from other items cannot catch the fabric. Wash it alone or with other blacks — a single white sock in the load can leave lint that shows on black crepe.

Skip the tumble dryer entirely. Heat is the fastest way to fade black dye and shrink the lining, and in Dubai the air does the job for free.

Drying and pressing in Dubai's climate

Hang the abaya on a wide hanger in the shade with airflow — a balcony in direct afternoon sun will fade the shoulders within a few dries. Dubai's humidity in summer means drying can take longer than expected; bring the abaya inside once it is surface-dry rather than leaving it out overnight.

Iron on low heat with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric, or use a steamer from a short distance. Direct high heat on black polyester blends leaves a shiny glaze that does not come out.

When home washing is a bad idea

Embroidery, beadwork, sequins and glued embellishments can loosen or cloud in water. Structured abayas with padding or interfacing lose their shape. And a stain that has already been rubbed or dried with heat is harder to lift at home than at a professional clean. In those cases, dry cleaning is the safer route — an abaya costs AED 18 and comes back pressed on a hanger.

If you would rather not risk a favourite piece, we dry clean abayas for AED 18 at our shop in Jebel Ali Industrial Area 1. Pickup and delivery across Dubai is free for orders from AED 50 (AED 10 below), and the standard turnaround is 24 hours — message us on WhatsApp and we will confirm everything before we start.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash my abaya in the washing machine?

Yes, if the care label allows it: cold water, gentle cycle, inside out, in a mesh bag. Never use the tumble dryer.

Why is my black abaya turning brown or grey?

Usually a combination of hot water, strong detergent and drying in direct sun. Wash cold with a mild liquid detergent and always dry in the shade.

How often should I wash an abaya in Dubai?

After every two to three wears in summer, since sweat and dust build up quickly in the heat. Air it on a hanger between wears.

Can I iron an abaya directly?

Only on low heat with a pressing cloth, or with a steamer. Direct high heat leaves a permanent shine on black synthetic fabrics.
